Rotterdam is a modern city in The Netherlands that is popular for its avant-garde architecture, cultural diversity, and vibrant nightlife.

It is also the largest port in Europe, and actually one of the biggest in the wold. So you will see how many of the landmarks are related to the water, like the iconic Erasmus Bridge and the Old Port. That’s also why taking a boat tour makes a lot of sense in your one visit to Rotterdam.

What makes Rotterdam different

View of Rotterdam

If you have visited other cities in The Netherlands, like Utrecht or Haarlem, you will have notice that they have many similarities between them. Mainly, the medieval buildings and well-preserved historic districts that you can see in most of them.

Rotterdam is different. The reason is that Rotterdam was heavily bombed during WWII. During its reconstruction, they opted for a wide-layout and modern design.

Here, several of the landmarks of the city are actually quite impressive in how modern and futuristic they look.

What to do in Rotterdam in one day?

Even if Rotterdam is a modern city, luckily it’s top attractions aren’t scattered and it’s easy to visit the top sites in one day.

Here is a complete itinerary that you can do by foot from your arrival point, which will very likely be the Rottercam Central Station (the train station).

Rotterdam Central Station

Rotterdam Central Station
The train station, where your one day adventure in Rotterdam begins

The first thing you will see when you arrive in Rotterdam, is their modern train station.

Already from your arrival you will find a stunning piece of modern architecture. Its roof is even covered in solar panels. Its shape, inspired by Rotterdam’s maritime history, resembles a prow of a ship at the sea.

St. Laurenskerk, the oldest church in Rotterdam

St. Laurenskerk

Your first stop in this one day itinerary in Rotterdam, is this historical church.

While it’s mostly modern architecture that you can see in Rotterdam, the St. Laurenskerk, is an exception. This is the oldest church in the city, dating back to the Middle Ages, and is worth a visit.

Between April and September, you can walk up its tower for a panoramic view of the city.

The Markthal: architecture and food

The Markthal, the food market you shouldn't miss in your one day in Rotterdam

After the church, head to the Markthal, a very special building in Rotterdam that you can spot from far.

On the outer part of the building, you will just see apartments, but inside you will find a huge food market. The market has around 100 fresh food stalls, some food shops and a variety of restaurants.

If you feel like trying something Dutch, you can get some cheese, or sweet treats like stroopwafels, or Dutch pancakes. Otherwise, there are plenty of international options, like Vietnamese, Latin, Japanese or Italian food.

This huge structure is not only an architectural marvel, but it also houses the biggest mural in the world. It is actually nicknamed as the “Sixtine Chapel of Rotterdam”.

The Cube houses

The Cube Houses

From there, head to the Cube Houses. These unusual and futuristic homes are built to resemble cubes tilted on their sides. The cubes are supposed to resemble treetops, and together they form an abstract forest.

The houses are actually inhabited, so make sure not to be too loud around the area. If you are curious about how they look from the inside, it is possible to actually visit one of the houses, which is the Kijk-Kubus.

Another option to visit and actually sleep in one of these houses, is to book a night at the Stayok Hostel Rotterdam.

Oudehaven: the old port

What to do in Rotterdam ine one day? Don't miss a visit to the Old Port
The Old Port of Rotterdam

If you head down the stairs located behind the Cube Houses, you’ll reach the Old Port of Rotterdam (Oudehaven) in no time.

Although there are only a few recreational sailing boats there now, since most of the maritime action takes place in the modern and massive Europoort, it’s still worth a visit!

And if you’re interested in sailing, the Maritime Museum is just a few minutes’ walk away. The museum has one of the most extensive collections of naval artifacts in the world, featuring thousands of objects such as stunning ship models.

Take a boat tour or Walk around the bridges

What to do in Rotterdam in one day? A visit to the iconic Erasmus bridge is a must.

To explore this area, you have two options.

The first option is to take a harbour boat tour, which will take you around the harbor area. The tour includes an audio guide, which will offer you an explanation about the landmarks that you will be crossing.

Among other buildings and structures, you will cruise by the Vertical City and the famous Erasmus bridge (more about them below).

The alternative would be to explore the area walking.

From the Old Port, cross the Willemsbruge (the Willem’s Bridge) towards the Noordereiland (the Northern Island). From there, cross another bridge, the Koninginnebrug (the Queen’s Bridge) towards the Feijenoord neighborhood.

Walk towards your right until you get to “De Rotterdam”, another futuristic building. Also known as The “Vertical City”, it is one of the most prominent buildings in the city. These interconnected towers form a massive complex that includes a hotel, residential apartments, offices, and conference facilities.

Afterwards, you can head to the historic Hotel New York. Formerly the headquarters of the Holland America Line, this red-brick gem that once saw passengers off to a new life in the States. It has a restaurant recommended by the Michelin Guide.

To get back to the city center, walk back on the Erasmus Bridge, an iconic landmark of Rotterdam.

Remastered: a Digital Art Experience

Just below the Erasmus Bridge, on the city center side, you will find Remastered (right were you take the boat tour, if you choose that option).

Remastered is a digital art venue where visitors can explore a world where art and technology intersect. The visit lasts one hour, and it’s a journey through some of the most imaginative works of art.

This includes Van Gogh’s colorful scenes (if you liked the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and you are into technology you will love it). You can also see Jeroen Bosch’s unearthly creatures.

In addition, visitors can sail through digital clouds, interact with schools of fish, walk through a waterfall, and even make their own UFO fly on a giant LED screen.

You can buy your ticket to Remastered here.

Witte de Withstraat: the hip and art street

From Remastered, continue your way to Witte de Withstraat, one of Rotterdam’s trendiest streets. The street has eclectic mix of shops, cafes, restaurants, and art galleries.

In the evening, the street comes alive with music and nightlife, with a variety of bars and clubs offering something for everyone.

Witte de Withstraat is also known for being Rotterdam’s art street. You will see colorful murals and graffiti along the street. And if you want to see some contemporary art exhibitions, make sure to visit the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art.

Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum

Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum

If you are up to appreciating more art, from Witte de Withstraat head to the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum, which is just a short walk away.

The museum building is already interesting by itself, and is yet another modern and futuristic structure that you will see in your one day trip in Rotterdam.

There are exhibits that span across many different time periods and art styles. You will find works by famous artists like Rembrandt, Van Gogh, and Monet.

Climb up the Euromast Tower

The Euromast, the highest tower in the Netherlands. An attraction you shouldn't miss in your one day in Rotterdam

Your one day visit to Rotterdam won’t be complete without a trip to the top of the Euromast Tower. This is the highest towers of the Netherlands.

Take the elevator and in just 30 seconds, you’ll soar up 100 meters. where you can find the viewing platform and restaurant. From there you can enjoy stunning panoramic view of Rotterdam, which can be amazing on a clear day.

But if that’s not enough for you, the Euroscoop is the answer. A dazzling rotating glass elevator that will elevate you all the way to the top, 185 meters up (around 600 feet).

If you are adventurous, from May to September, you can even abseil down the tower.

If you are visiting Rotterdam just for the day, you can finish your visit here. From the Euromast you will be in the train station in just 35 minutes by foot. If you are staying for the night, keep reading for the best tips for enjoying Rotterdam’s nightlife.

Nighttime: Experience Rotterdam’s vibrant nightlife scene

If you are staying for the night, there will be enough options to enjoy an evening out. This bustling city has plenty to offer, from live music venues, to trendy bars and clubs. Here are some ideas for an unforgettable evening in Rotterdam:

Another option would be heading to Rotown. This is a popular music club that hosts both up-and-coming and established artists. If you are a vegetarian, you will love this place, since it’s a vegan snackbar as well.

Is it worth it to stay in Rotterdam for more than one day?

Yes, there are more things to see in Rotterdam if you are planning a weekend trip from Amstersdam or from another nearby city.

If you have an extra day in Rotterdam, my suggestion would be to take a day trip to the famous windmill village of Kinderdijk.

Located just a short distance from the city, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to 19 windmills, so it’s a great place if you are are interested in seeing the typical traditional Dutch windmills. It’s also a good choice if you wanted to visit the famous windmill village of Zaanse Schans, but with less tourists.

The windmills in Kinderdikj were built in the 18th century to help drain water from the surrounding land. In case you didn’t know, the Dutch are experts in “creating” land to live out of places that were covered by water, by draining it out.

To get to Kinderdijk, you can take a direct bus from Rotterdam Centraal or rent a bike and cycle there along the scenic bike path. Once you arrive, you can explore the windmills and learn about the history of this unique engineering feat.

Be sure to also visit the visitor center, where you can watch a short film about the windmills and purchase souvenirs. And if you’re hungry, there are plenty of cafes and restaurants in the area serving up traditional Dutch dishes.

Getting to Rotterdam

Rotterdam is a well-connected city that can be easily reached by plane, train, or car.

By train

If you’re traveling from within the Netherlands, there are direct train connections to Rotterdam from all major cities, including Amsterdam, Utrecht, and The Hague.

By car

If you prefer to drive, Rotterdam is easily accessible by car via the A16 and A20 highways. However, keep in mind that parking in the city center can be expensive, so it’s best to park your car at a park-and-ride in the outskirts and take public transportation into the city.

By cruise

The Cruise Terminal Rotterdam is located in the center, on Wilhelmina Pier at the south end of the famous Erasmus Bridge.

From the terminal, you’re just a quick five-minute stroll from the Wilhelminaplein metro station. Jump on Line D or Line E and head north for four stops, and you’ll find yourself at Rotterdam Central Station in no time. This itinerary starts at the Central station so you could head there, or start in the opposite direction.

The cruise terminal is also conveniently serviced by trams #23 and #25. So, whether you prefer to take the metro or a charming tram ride, you’ll have no problem zipping your way into the heart of Rotterdam in no time.
